    Moving to Dorset

    Move to Dorset Today

Dorset has been a favourite holiday destination for generations; home to a wild and beautiful Jurassic coastline, stunning countryside, and a wealth of entertainment opportunities.

However, its popularity as a place to relocate to has also increased exponentially over the past ten years too.

Although Dorset is satisfyingly distant for many, its location is not so remote as to be cut off.

What was once seen as predominantly a retirement location due to lack of employment opportunities, has now undergone a complete 360-degree rotation.

As thousands across the UK have realised that working from home is not only possible, but much more beneficial in a number of ways, plenty have already upped sticks and moved to Dorset.

When it comes to location, there are literally hundreds of small picture box perfect towns and villages to choose from either by the sea or nestled within Dorset’s rural landscape such as Kimmeridge, Swanage, Lulworth, Bovington, Tolpuddle and Poole.

    Interestingly, Dorset has no motorways!

    History of Dorset

The county has a long history of human settlement stretching back to the Neolithic era. The first human visitors to Dorset were Mesolithic hunters, from around 8000 BC

The Romans arrived in Dorset during their conquest of Britain in AD 43. They conquered Dorset’s indigenous Celtic tribe, and during the Early Middle Ages, the Saxons settled in the area and made Dorset a shire in the 7th century.

Throughout the early and mid-18th century, much smuggling took place along the Dorset coast; its coves, caves and sandy beaches providing plenty of opportunities to secretly smuggle contraband ashore.

In more recent times, the Dorset coast played a major part in WW2. Tens-of-thousands of troops departed Weymouth, Portland and Poole harbours during D-Day and gliders from RAF Tarrant Rushton dropped troops near Caen to begin Operation Tonga

The many visitor centres and museums offer an insight into the county’s important and fascinating past and make interesting places to visit.

    Dorset Property Prices

Packed with just about every type of property you can think of Dorset certainly gives buyers a massive choice.

The Portland and Purbeck stone cottages are highly prized, these are mainly found in the south of the county.

If you have a modest budget, Dorchester and Sturminster Newton are both good places to look, with one-bedroom flats starting at £75,000.

Those with plenty to spend can start their search for a home with a sea view in the very affluent areas of Bournemouth and Poole. Whilst Sandbanks, is where the most expensive homes in the UK are sited.

As interest in the region has increased, so its property prices have followed suit.

According to Rightmove, Homes have increased in value over the past year by around 4%.

The average cost of a property is now £341,796.

The majority of sales in Dorset during the last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £464,333. Flats sold for an average of £228,251, with semi-detached properties fetching £299,468.
