    Moving to Lyme Regis

    Move to Lyme Regis Today

Lyme Regis is known as the ‘Pearl of Dorset’, befitting of a stunningly beautiful seaside town located on the coast of Dorset.

This historic fishing port is found at the mouth of the River Lym and is an incredibly popular place to live in Dorset. Here are some key points about Lyme Regis:

Lyme Regis supports good rail connections to the local towns and cities, only 40 minutes away from Exeter, 3 hours from London. The local town of Axminster is only a 15-minute drive away.

With some ‘outstanding’ schools, Lyme Regis is great for families.

The property market is vast and there seems to be something for everyone. A three-bed semi will cost you under £250,000; but properties can sell for upwards of £1million here.

Lyme Regis was the filming location for The French Lieutenant’s Woman in 1981, bolstering Lyme Regis’ popularity and fame.

    History of Lyme Regis

The first written evidence of a settlement here goes back to 774AD when it was initially gifted to the Abbot of Sherborne to set up a salt works.

In 1284, Lyme was granted a royal charter to add the title of ‘Regis’ to its name. Fast forward through the wars and sieges to the 18th century.

During this time, Lyme Regis had become a popular seaside resort, with influential artists, poets and writers visiting here throughout this time.

In 1903, Lyme Regis was granted a railway station, creating a boom in tourism. Sadly, in the 1960s, the town lost its railway due to huge cutbacks in a national scheme.

Currently, Lyme Regis attracts thousands of fossil hunters every year, and many have their eyes set on Lyme Regis as their future home.

    Lyme Regis Property Prices

The average property price during March 2020 was £445,884, a fair amount higher than the average for the county.

The properties on sale range in value; however, the majority of homes are upwards of £500,000.

In the past 12 months, the property value has increased by 1.08%, and over the past five years, it has changed by 20.98%. This just goes to show how popular this region in the UK is.

In terms of property types, flats in Lyme Regis sold for an average of £252,097 and terraced houses for £347,717.

    Lyme Regis Schools

Lyme Regis is served by two primary schools. The first is Mrs Ethelston’s CofE Primary Academy, which received a ‘good’ from Ofsted; however, the percentage of pupils meeting the expected standard in reading and writing is almost 30% above the national average.

The other primary school in the region is St Michael’s Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, which received a ‘requires improvement’ from Ofsted.

When it comes to secondary schools, Lyme Regis has a great choice available to you. The Colyton Grammar School, The Woodroffe School and The King’s School all received an ‘outstanding’ from Ofsted and score incredibly well on the ranking system on SchoolGuide.

Things To Do in Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis not only offers exceptional access to the countryside, the coast and the surrounding town; it also offers you a wealth of festivals throughout the year, plenty of beaches and delicious fresh food from local restaurants and cafés.

First and foremost, even if you haven’t moved here in the summertime… as soon as the sun is out, make sure to head to Town Beach. A brilliant beach for all ages, whether you want to build the fairytale castle of your dreams, or maybe you’d prefer to take a swim in the bracing British sea, the choice is yours!

If you’re a fossil enthusiast, there is plenty of searching, finding and enjoyment to be had here. There’s nothing like the feeling of finding the fossilised shell of an extinct creature that existed over 50 million years ago.

Maybe you’re just looking for a casual stroll and some fine food to follow? Pop over to the HIX Oyster and Fish House for some incredible locally sourced fish and seafood.
