    History of Dorchester

    Dorchester is a historic market town with its roots stemming back to the Roman times. The town was initially named Durnovaria, and built by the Romans in 43AD.

    Reminders of Dorchester’s history can be seen to this day in the County Museum and the Roman Town House. If that’s not enough, every Wednesday is market day, which began with the Romans!

    Dorchester was temporarily occupied in the 1600s by Robert Dormer and 2000 troops. This was part of the English Civil War; however it was recaptured by Puritans sometime after.

    In more recent history, the town is famous for being home to Thomas Hardy, a renowned novelist and poet who passed away in 1928. His cottage still remains there to this day.
