Fordingbridge is a town found on the River Avon in the New Forest District of Hampshire. The town was initially known as “Ford”, but the “bridge” was added when the town expanded, and a beautiful seven arched bridge was created which spanned the river. Here are some key points about Fordingbridge:
Once famous for smuggling, this town has developed into a beautiful, scenic town which welcomes visitors from all corners of the UK.
Fordingbridge on the Dorset, Hampshire border, used to be famous for its brickmaking, pottery and textiles. It is now more commonly known as the northern gateway to the New Forest.
Augustus John lived here between 1927 and 1961, with a statue to honour him near the town bridge.
The town has excellent connections, with the closest central train station being Salisbury, just a 20-minute drive down the road, which offers 90-minute journeys to London Waterloo.
First recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086, Forde (at the time) had a total of 13 households, compared to its modern-day population of 6,000.
Fordingbridge was lucky enough to acquire a station in 1866; however, this was closed in the mid-late 1900s due to the mass closure of British railway lines.
From the 1960s onwards, the town expanded exponentially, with several housing developments being added to the core of the town, causing the population to increase to its current level.
To save the town from too much traffic, a bypass was created in the mid-70s which diverted the vast majority of traffic running through the town, making this town, once again, a quiet and peaceful town.
The average property price here is £453,467. This is above the average for the county of Hampshire by £100,000; however, being dubbed the ‘northern gateway to the New Forest’ doesn’t come cheaply.
Over the past 12 months, Fordingbridge has seen a 4.68% increase in property prices. Over the past five years, there has been a 13.05% property price increase. This steady growth goes to show how popular an ara Fordingbridge is.
In terms of property types, flats in Fordingbridge sold for an average of £210,141 and terraced houses for £309,765. Prices according to Zoopla averages, March 2020
