Blandford Forum is a traditional market town, within a 45-minute drive to Bournemouth and Poole.
It is slightly different from the other towns in Dorset and will come across as a unique Georgian town. Here are a few key things to know about Blandford Forum:
In 1731, there was a devastating fire here. Two brothers, known as the Bastard Brothers (Bastard being their surname), helped rebuild the town, creating an eye-grabbing town built with Georgian architecture in mind.
Far enough from the coast to avoid the tourists, but close enough that it’s only a short journey away.
Blandford Forum is the perfect distance for those looking for peace and quiet without the isolation.
Blandford Forum offers a wide variety of schools for all ages and abilities, many of which are rated well by Ofsted.
The town’s name originates from Blaen y Ford, meaning a place near a ford. A settlement grew up and across the River Stour, developing Blandford Forum into an important market town.
In 1307, Edward I granted the Lord of the manor the right to hold a bi-annual fair; further down the line Charles I granted Blandford Forum a charter which incorporated them as a borough.
Blandford Forum has seen its fair share of tragedies over the years. In 1564 a fire swept through the town, destroying several buildings. While this seemed terrible at the time, the 1677 fire burnt down over 30 homes.
Finally, the worst came, labelled the Great Fire. In 1731, the Great Fire desolated Blandford, destroying churches, shops, homes and schools. Only a few scattered buildings remained after this fire.
It was after this fire that John and William Bastard designed an entirely new town hall, shops, homes and school. The Georgian buildings they built have remained mostly unaltered to this day.
Blandford Forum has seen enormous increases in property prices over the past five years, reaching 16.52% on average.
The average house price in Blandford Forum during March 2020 is currently £ 354,107. This is only slightly over the average for the county of Dorset by £10,000. In the previous 12 months, the property market here has increased by 4.49%.
This is a significant increase for a 12 month period. It’s impossible to tell what the property market will do, but if these prices keep increasing in this way then properties here will become highly coveted.
