    History of Beaminster

    Beaminster can be tracked all the way back to the 7th century when it started as a small settlement.

    Originally called Bebingmynster (Church of Bebbe), the current church was built between the 13th and 15th centuries.

    In the 13th century, Beaminster was awarded a charter that called for Thursday to be market day. This still rings true today, with everything from pastries and cakes to jackets and shirts.

    Most of present-day Beaminster was created in the 18th and 19th century, with a few older buildings on the edges of the town. Close by to Beaminster; you will find an Elizabethan manor with a beautiful valley garden.

    Today, Beaminster presents an easy-going life, with excellent schools, great food and just a general sense of overall tranquillity.

    Beaminster, being a small town, only has a few schools in the area, both primary and secondary wise.

    Beaminster St Mary’s Academy received a “satisfactory” from Ofsted; however, significant changes have occurred since their last inspection.

    The other primary school in the area is Mountjoy School, which is a special school for pupils with severe learning difficulties. This received a “good” upon the last Ofsted inspection.

    Children in Beaminster will often filter into Beaminster School, a mixed secondary school which runs a joint sixth form with another school, Beaminster School received a “good” from Oftsed at their last inspection.
