Dating back to the Saxon times, the village was first recorded in 1086 in the Domesday Book and was known as ‘Creneburne’.

This was a famous location in the 13th century as King John visited the Cranborne Downs, and the town continued to host many subsequent kings after this; often hosting an excellent market day when a King visited these grounds.
The population around this time was so significant due to the soldiers that were garrisoned there for King John’s arrivals.
